Tool Recommendations For Getting Started with Leather Working
Share
I have yet to find a decent "beginners kit" for leatherworking on Amazon, so here is the list of tools I have students use in our Intro to Leather Working Workshop. All of them can be purchased from Amazon and nothing here will break the bank
- Cutting Mat
- Stitch Pony
- #1 (0.8mm) & #3 (1.2mm) Edge Bevelers
- Large & Small Slickers (or you can use a piece of canvas)
- 004 Harness Needles (you can also use 003 Harness Needles, which are a little bit larger)
- Sand Paper (220, 400, & 1000 grits will get you very far. I'm partial to 3M)
-
Smooth faced hammer (optional)
- You can also use a cheap upholstery hammer from any hardware store
- Tokonole (for burnishing your edges)
-
Edge Kote
- A sharp pencil or golf tee for applying the Edge Kote
- 0.6mm Ritza Tiger Thread
- Thread Snips
- A cheap lighter (you can pick this up at any gas station)
- Pricking Irons
- We use between a 3.85 - 4mm tooth spacing on our designs. You can find an affordable set of 4mm irons here
-
Leather Punch Mat
- If you have access to a 3D Printer, here is the tool caddy we created
Happy Making!
